You are probably looking at this web page if you have been told you might be coming to this school. The information here is to try and help you to find out about the school, and we would be very happy for you to come and have a look at the school as well.
At King Edwin we can offer you a fresh start, and the chance to learn how to deal with the things in life and at school you find hard. We try and help you learn from any mistakes, and that it's O.K. to make a mistake as long as you learn from it.
We can also help you to feel confident that you can learn. We know that almost everything can be learned, if you try hard and put in lots of effort. This is called a Growth Mindset. It's one of the most important things in life.
King Edwin school is a small school with very small classes (about 6 or 7 is the largest class we have)
We spend a lot of time on outdoor activities like surfing, hiking and visiting places.
We also do a lot of in-school activity to help our students to learn about team work and to learn about how to learn.
Our lessons are short, to help you to concentrate. Each lesson is 45 mins long.
Every day apart from Wednesday we have Maths, English and Science. These are all in the morning. During every week we also have lessons on Art, Personal and Social Development, Cooking, Careers, IT and PE.
Thursday afternoons are Options afternoons. You can choose your option subjects when you join the school. Options are; cookery, motor vehicle, holisitcs, sport, drama, work experience and additional academic study (academic top up). Every student can choose 1 option per year.
Every week we take part in social learning. Social learning is learning with others, and helping each other to improve in areas we need to develop and improve. Social learning happens in school and during our Duke of Edinburgh Day. On Duke of Edinburgh day (Wednesday) every week we take part in an outing or trip. Trips take place to different places, and you will learn about yourself and what you are capable of, you will learn how to get along with each other, and you will learn how to cope when things are tough! You will also have a chance to practise the skills you have been developing during the week.
Each week, we reward all of our students that have completed their lessons, and made progress with their targets. This reward is known as achieving 'responsibility'. Responsibility is different every week but is only for the students who have earned it. Some weeks students have gone to see a film, gone go-karting, visited Pizza Hut or other restaurants or gone bowling. Every week is different. It's a fantastic end to the week!
